Lawrence police arrested a 54-year-old Lawrence man Wednesday afternoon after a woman accused him of threatening her with a hand tool and battering her around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of West 31st Street.

The woman told officers she sprayed the suspect with mace. Capt. Paul Fellers said the suspect had left before officers arrived, but police found him later and arrested him on aggravated assault and battery charges. Medics examined the victim, but she was not taken to the hospital.

The suspect remained at the Douglas County Jail Thursday, but prosecutors had not yet filed official charges.
