Prosecutors say Kansas man facing federal tax charges tried to flee overseas

? Prosecutors say a Topeka man facing federal tax charges was caught as he boarded a plane to flee overseas.

Thirty-three-year-old John Karundo Mukundi was arrested March 29 aboard a plane flying to Washington D.C. Prosecutors say he intended to fly to Amsterdam, then on to Africa.

Mukundi was indicted in March on 38 charges involving taxes, fraud and identity theft. The indictment alleges Mukundi used tax preparation software to submit fraudulent tax returns. He was released after that arrest on the condition that he appear in Shawnee County Court and not obtain a passport.

The new indictment alleges that he obtained an emergency certificate from the Kenyan Embassy in Washington D.C. to fly to Kenya.
