From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 1, 1971:

• Atty. Gen. Vern Miller spoke to a standing-room-only crowd at a Kiwanis Club lunch at the Holiday Inn. In his remarks, Miller insisted that he had not attempted to create a “Gestapo-like atmosphere” during his early-morning drug raids in February. He said that the raids were made at night and without warning “because we thought there would be a better chance of getting the people we were after” and because “there would be less chance of an incident.”
• The Kansas House tentatively approved a bill to authorize construction of a toll highway from Hutchinson to the Oklahoma border. The proposed route would extend from Hutchinson to Wichita, to the vicinity of Strother Field in Cowley County, between Arkansas City and Winfield, and then on to the Oklahoma line.
• A molasses tank truck overturned about 10 miles west of Garden City on U.S. 83. Fortunately for the clean-up crews, most of the sticky cargo had run into a ditch rather than onto the road.
