Douglas County jury deadlocks in trial on child abuse charges

A Douglas County jury this week deadlocked and couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict in the case of a Lawrence man charged with abusing a 4-year-old child in August.

Prosecutors on Aug. 25 filed one charge of abusing a child against Corey L. Lewis, 34. They allege he abused the child Aug. 14 at an apartment in the 1300 block of West 24th Street.

The trial began Monday. After the jurors failed to reach a verdict on Tuesday, Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin declared a mistrial and scheduled a hearing for 11 a.m. Oct. 6 to schedule a new trial.

Lewis remains free on $5,000 bond.
