A Jeep came to rest against some trees after a single-vehicle rollover accident between Lawrence and Lecompton. The accident was reported near E 758 Road and N 1800 Road about 6 p.m. Sept. 28, 2010.

The driver of this Jeep was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital after a single-vehicle accident on the Farmers' Turnpike between Lawrence and Lecompton.

A newspaper carrier for the Lawrence Journal-World was injured and flown via LifeStar helicopter to a Kansas City-area hospital Tuesday evening after he was ejected from his car in a rollover accident, witnesses said. The accident happened between Lawrence and Lecompton in the 700 section of North 1800 Road, also known as the Farmers’ Turnpike.

Units from Lecompton Township Fire Department and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical were dispatched to the area about 6 p.m. The man’s Jeep was lying on its side and plastic newspaper bags were strewn in nearby trees.

“We heard tires screech, but didn’t think anything of it since we live so close to the road,” said Penny McCurdy, who lives nearby. McCurdy walked outside once she heard sirens and said the man was lying in the grass. She said emergency crews “spent a few minutes working on him” before they loaded the man into the helicopter.

A Douglas County Sherirf’s officer reportedly told a bystander that the man was “banged up, but should be OK.”

The man’s name was not officially released Tuesday night.
