Hays ? Restrictions on the height of wind turbines are causing problems for a proposed wind energy facility at Fort Hays State University.

The Hays Daily News reported that the proposed facility would consist of two turbines of no more than 500 feet. The problem is the city’s zoning regulations prohibit wind turbines taller than 125 feet in the 3-mile radius surrounding Hays.

The university has requested the policy be amended to allow taller towers. But city officials have expressed concern that it is not legally feasible to amend regulations for one request.

The wind facility would generate up to 5 megawatts of energy and would save the university an estimated $800,000 annually.
