“Fall fell on Lawrence with a bang” was the opening line of an article describing the recent weather. The previous two days’ storms had brought over 4 inches of rain as well as thunder and lightning. A bolt of lightning had struck a house south of Eudora at about 1:50 a.m., setting it ablaze and causing an estimated $10,000 in extensive damage. Chilly temperatures followed in the wake of the storms; lows for the night were expected to approach the record of 37 which had been set just two years previously.
Members of Lawrence’s Urban Renewal Agency were planning a trip to Wisconsin to visit the 450,000-square-foot Wausau center, the first downtown mall developed by Jacobs, Visconsi and Jacobs. JVC had recently joined with local developer of record Town Center Venture Corp. in a joint effort aimed at developing a mall in the 600 block of Lawrence’s downtown.
