Report: Man approaches girl on Schwegler playground

Lawrence police are investigating a report of a man approaching a female student in an after-school program Monday afternoon at Schwegler School, a school district spokeswoman said.

Sgt. Randy Roberts, a patrol shift supervisor, said officers were called at 4:30 p.m. Monday to the playground at Schwegler, 2201 Ousdahl, because of “suspicious activity of someone hanging around the school.”

Julie Boyle, a school district spokeswoman, said officials with the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club program at Schwegler called police after a female student reported being approached by a man while on the playground.

“I’m sure that the parents are very pleased that the daughter talked to the staff immediately,” said Janet Murphy, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.

Boyle said the man left campus before police arrived. The student’s parents were also called. The after-school program’s staff members are trained several times a year on how to recognize suspicious behavior.
