Two successful businessmen, a doctor and an athlete. Four men from different backgrounds who have excelled in their careers. The one thing tying them all together: Lawrence High School.

On Sunday the Lawrence Lions Alumni Association inducted them into the school’s Hall of Honor.

“They represent a lot of different things from athletics to academic to financial accomplishments,” said Lawrence High School Principal Matt Brungardt. “The mark they’ve left on society and the high school is why they were selected this year.”

The 2010 inductees were Sam Campbell, Steve Scheid, Dr. Larry Kwak and Wesley B. Walker.

“It was very special,” said Campbell. “It’s great to be recognized by people that know your background in the place where you grew up.”

Campbell is the president and chairman of CritiTech. He said his success is a testament to the teachers at LHS. “They all helped form us. Not just in the subjects they were teaching, but in ways that we should greet the world, meet the world and help form our characters.”

Campbell was the only inductee on hand to accept his award. The three other honorees were unable to attend, due in part to their successful careers. Dr. Larry Kwak’s wife accepted his award because he is in Asia doing cancer research.Steve Scheid, chairman of Janus Capital Group, was in Istanbul, Turkey, on business.

Wesley B. Walker, a stellar athlete at LHS and a Pan American Games champion as a wheelchair athlete, was represented by his family at the ceremony. “Wesley thought, ‘If I die, I was at least a champion’ and that was going to be his legacy,” said Jesse Newman, Walker’s cousin. “Now he has a new legacy.”

Part of that legacy includes adding the men’s pictures to the Hall of Honor wall in the school’s rotunda. Administrators said it lets students see what they can achieve if they work hard enough.

“We have a long history of outstanding graduates and we like to honor those both for their sake but also to encourage students at Lawrence high to achieve the greatness these inductees have achieved,” said Sue Lewis, president of the alumni association.
