Find a flattering coat for fall

A light sweater or jacket is perfect for the current fall weather in Lawrence, but sooner than you know, chillier nights will be upon us. Read about this season’s must-have outerwear now so that you can start hunting for your go-to, essential fall jacket before the cold sets in.

Motocross jacket:

Cute with skinny jeans, skirts or frilly, feminine dresses, an MC jacket should be on everyone’s shopping wish list. Look for a fitted leather jacket for the most up-to-date look. Also, pay attention to important details, like the zipper position and type. (An exposed, side zipper is my favorite and most traditional.) Pick a motorcycle jacket in black or grey, or opt for a fun but versatile color, like navy or maroon. If a motorcycle jacket just isn’t your thing, an aviation jacket would be a good substitute. Typically, an aviation jacket maintains a softer shape, and its classic, easy brownish-tan leather is perfect for those who frequently incorporate vintage clothing and boots into their fall wardrobes.

Cape:

Prominent on the runways of Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim and Salvatore Ferragamo, this is the season to don a cape. The best part of this trend is the option of versatility — capes perfect for every body type and fashion style. Think about where you will wear your cape before deciding on the shape, color and fabric (walking downtown, running around campus, socializing at an indoor event, going to and from work…). Capes are great for layering over chunky, thick knits, and for some circumstances, lighter fabrics and shorter, poncho-style capes may be more appropriate. Longer, bulkier capes tend to overwhelm petite frames, so if this is you, pick a shorter cape with an interesting cape. A cape that forms a triangular opening and buttons on top will be lengthening, look lighter and more open.

Military coat:

A military-inspired coat or utility jacket is another popular style this fall. The material is usually lighter, great for those in-between days where the temperature isn’t too hot or too cold (especially if you are indecisive, like me). Pick a shorter jacket with oversized buttons and a structured collar for dressy evening occasions, or a longer anorak with big pockets, metal buckles and distressed fabric for casual, daytime dress. No matter what shape you prefer, all will look stylish paired with your favorite fall hats, boots and accessories.

Double-breasted coat:

Although a double-breasted coat is normally much more substantial and a bit too warm for most fall days, it is a classic investment piece worth mentioning now so that you can really research and locate the right one. Its linear A-line shape is flattering, its simplistic structure quite practical. Working women will find that the double-breasted coat is perfectly suited for business occasions as well as casual affairs. Wear your double-breasted coat with trousers or skinny jeans and flats on the weekends. Choose one with large, flap-pockets and a belt or half-belt. Also, pay attention to the buttons on the sleeves and chest, and look for a long back vent for comfort and mobility.
