Ex-Mizzou RB Washington faces new charges

Former Missouri running back Derrick Washington is facing new charges of domestic assault after an ex-girlfriend complained he hit her in the face several times.

Boone County court records show the 21-year-old senior was charged Tuesday with two misdemeanor counts of third-degree domestic assault after a weekend argument led to his arrest early Sunday.

Washington’s lawyer did not immediately return a call Wednesday.

The former team captain is already facing a felony deviate sexual assault charge tied to an incident over the summer. He was initially suspended but then kicked off the football team Sept. 1. Missouri is allowing him to keep his scholarship if he stays in school.

Texas reserve tailback ineligible

Austin, Texas — Texas senior tailback Vondrell McGee has been declared academically ineligible and will not play this season.

Coach Mack Brown said Wednesday that the former starting tailback lost his appeal to the NCAA but remains enrolled at Texas and is on schedule to graduate in December.

McGee did not play in No. 6 Texas’ first two games. He played in 35 games in his career, starting seven, and rushed for 973 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Gamecocks dismiss TE Saunders

Columbia, S.C. — South Carolina has kicked tight end Weslye Saunders off the football team.

Gamecocks athletic director Eric Hyman announced the decision Wednesday.

Saunders, suspended since Aug. 23, had been at the center of the Gamecocks’ NCAA problems this summer. He was questioned by the governing body about potential agent contact regarding a party in South Beach, Fla., this spring. He was also among several Gamecocks asked by coach Steve Spurrier to leave a local hotel where they had been staying.

Saunders was suspended by Spurrier last month for violations the coach said were not connected to the NCAA probe.

ND QB played with blurred vision

South Bend, Ind. — Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist was so determined to finish an opening touchdown drive last week against Michigan that he stayed in the game even though he couldn’t see out of his right eye.

Crist finished off the drive by scoring a one-yard TD — seven plays after he took a hit from a helmet during a 19-yard run that led to the blurred vision.

Crist was eventually removed from the game when he apparently had trouble recalling a play or understanding parts of a phone conversation with offensive coordinator Charley Molnar.

He then sat out the rest of the first half. He returned for the second half and led the Irish to 17 points in their 28-24 loss.

Saban: Ingram ready to go

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — Alabama coach Nick Saban says Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is “ready to go” and will play against Duke on Saturday.

Ingram has practiced all week for the top-ranked Crimson Tide after missing the first two games following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Saban said Wednesday he hasn’t decided on Ingram’s role his first game back in a game where the Tide is heavily favored.

Suspended Pitt RB likely won’t play

Pittsburgh — Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt says suspended running back Jason Douglas is unlikely to play for the Panthers again after being charged with striking a pedestrian with his car while driving drunk.

Wannstedt said the likelihood of Douglas returning “is seriously in jeopardy.”

Allen Park, Mich. — The Detroit Lions will start Shaun Hill at quarterback in Sunday’s home opener against Philadelphia as Matthew Stafford recovers from a shoulder injury.

Coach Jim Schwartz didn’t say Wednesday when Stafford might play again.

Chiefs LB Sheffield out for season

Kansas City, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs rookie linebacker Cameron Sheffield is gone for the season after being placed on injured reserve.

The Chiefs said Wednesday the club has signed linebacker Charlie Anderson to replace Sheffield, who was hospitalized with a neck injury after hurting his neck while making a tackle during an Aug. 27 preseason game against Philadelphia.

Sheffield was drafted in the fifth round out of Troy and was competing for a job as a backup.

Anderson, a 2004 draft pick by Houston, has played in 92 games with the Texans and Dolphins.

Eagles’ Kolb, Bradley uncertain

Philadelphia — Eagles coach Andy Reid says quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley are making progress, though neither has passed the next phase of their concussion testing.

Reid wouldn’t rule either player out for Philadelphia’s game against Detroit on Sunday, but it would seem unlikely they could play.

Colts safety Sanders out

Indianapolis — Colts safety Bob Sanders is out indefinitely following surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm.

The 2007 NFL defensive player of the year was injured on Houston’s first offensive series Sunday when he landed awkwardly on his shoulders.

Giants starting TE Boss out

East Rutherford, N.J. — New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss is going to miss Sunday night’s game against the Indianapolis Colts because of a concussion.

Chargers put long snapper on IR

San Diego — The Chargers have placed 17-year veteran long snapper David Binn on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, meaning he will miss the rest of the season.

Sharpe on CBS hiatus

Atlanta — CBS says former NFL player Shannon Sharpe is taking a break from football analysis after a woman obtained a temporary restraining order against him.

A hearing on the order is scheduled for Monday in Atlanta. Documents filed in Fulton County court show Sharpe was ordered not to come within 200 yards of the woman and not to have any contact with her or her family.

Heat camp out of town

Miami — LeBron James will take his talents to a different beach when the Miami Heat open camp.

He’ll get to South Beach eventually. But first — Fort Walton Beach.

The Miami Heat announced Wednesday night that they’ll hold their first camp with James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh at Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida’s Panhandle from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3. Miami has typically held training camp at its home arena, but in an effort to limit distractions going into this much-hyped season, the Heat wanted a different locale.

Fake Togo team brought letters

Lome, Togo — The mystery Togo team that played Bahrain in an international soccer exhibition was made up of “unidentified players and their shadowy handlers” and belonged to a “mafia group” the country’s sports minister told the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Christophe Tchao said the team, which lost 3-0 in an apparently innocuous game at Bahrain’s National Stadium in Riffa last week, did not have any authorization from Togo’s Ministry of Sport — which is required for teams representing the country.

More details have been uncovered by the AP on the fake Togo party, which appears to have also tricked the Bahrain Football Association into believing that they were an official national team.

A former Togo soccer official has said his signature was forged in a letter to the Bahraini federation that set up the match.
