25 years ago: Child playing with lighter starts fire causing $10,300 in damage

After a special meeting filled with comments from the public, the Baldwin city council voted 3-2 against Mayor Char Jockman’s nominee for police chief. The matter was currently at a stalemate. The position had been vacant since July when the previous police chief had resigned.

Cattle originally of English origin (Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn) that had been in the U.S. for years were slowly being supplemented by so-called “exotic cattle” such as Gelbvieh (from Germany), Brahman (East Asian), Limosine (French), Simmental (Swiss), and the American cross-bred Beefmaster. Local ranchers cited leaner meat and “hybrid vigor” as their reasons for choosing the breeds.

A child playing with a cigarette lighter started a fire which caused $10,300 worth of damage to a Lawrence home. The fire also melted two aerial cables which carried phone service, resulting in a phone outage for about 45 customers in northwest Lawrence. Southwestern Bell expected to have to replace about 800 feet of cable to fix the problem.
