Woman arrested following arson incident on MIssissippi Street

Lawrence police arrested a woman Wednesday afternoon following an incident involving arson in the 700 block of Mississippi Street.

According to a media release from Lawrence Police Sgt. Matt Sarna, officers were dispatched to 730 Miss., about 4:40 p.m. in reference to a possible burglary. Once on scene, officers found a woman inside the house north of the original call location. The woman was breaking windows and throwing items out into the yard.

Officers recognized the woman as a resident of the first-floor apartment. When they attempted to make contact with her, she was not cooperative and began throwing items at the officers, telling them to leave.

Police officers on the scene then noticed blood on the ground and became concerned the woman had injured herself. Officers also noticed an odor believed to be natural gas and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical was notified and asked to stand by while the gas was shut off.

While at the scene, officers also noticed a broken window at 730 Miss. While checking the residence, they found no one was present and found an extensive amount of criminal damage in the kitchen area.

While investigating the residence at 730 Miss., officers observed what they believed to be open flames in a front room of 726 Miss. Fire and Medical crews entered the building and extinguished a fire in the living room. Officers searched the house and located the female in the basement, where she was then arrested.

Lawrence police officers and Arson Investigators are continuing the investigation into the incident and advised no further information would be available until Thursday morning.
