Royals send utilityman Bloomquist to Reds

? Down to only two fully healthy outfielders for their playoff push, the Cincinnati Reds acquired utilityman Willie Bloomquist from the Kansas City Royals on Monday for either a player to be named or cash.

The NL Central leaders had been looking to get another outfielder after injuries left them with just Jonny Gomes in left and Drew Stubbs in center.

“He’s much needed,” manager Dusty Baker said. “He plays all over, especially in the outfield where we could use him. Plus, he can pinch-run and pinch-hit, especially against left-handers.”

Heisman Trust to meet today

New York — The Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to hold its monthly meeting today, but there has been no indication from the group about whether a decision on Reggie Bush and the 2005 award is coming soon.

Heisman spokesman Tim Henning said Monday the eight-member trust had no plans to make any announcements at this time.

Yahoo! Sports, citing unidentified sources, reported last week that the former Southern California running back is expected to be stripped of the Heisman by the end of the month. The report also said the award would be left vacant.

Iverson might play in China

Philadelphia — Unwanted by the NBA, Allen Iverson is considering playing in China.

Gary Moore, Iverson’s personal manager, said Iverson has not been contacted by any NBA team with training camps set to open in less than two weeks. Moore said there is “legitimate interest” between Iverson and a team in China to work out a deal.

Moore did not know the team’s name and was vague on details.

“We’re very astonished, to say the least, that not one team has contacted us with any interest,” Moore said. “I just don’t understand it.”

Iverson is 17th on the NBA’s career scoring list with 24,368 points over a 14-year career with Philadelphia, Denver, Detroit and Memphis. He won the MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the finals.

Doc: Four concussions not trend

New York — The co-chairman of the NFL’s Brain, Head and Neck Medical Committee doesn’t see four concussions sustained by players in the first weekend of the regular season as a trend.

But Dr. Hunt Batjer says the rate of concussions is something the league and its medical staff will closely monitor throughout the season.

“One weekend doesn’t make a trend,” Batjer said. “It’s certainly a number that caught everyone’s eye.

“If this pace continues, it’s either better reporting of the symptoms, or it is something else systemic. We must keep a close eye on this and we will.”

Sustaining concussions on Sunday were quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley of the Eagles in their loss to Green Bay, and Panthers quarterback Matt Moore and Giants tight end Kevin Boss in their game, won by New York.

In other NFL news:

• The Philadelphia Eagles placed Pro Bowl fullback Leonard Weaver and starting center Jamaal Jackson on injured reserve, ending their seasons. The team signed fullback Owen Schmitt and tight end/fullback Garrett Mills to fill the roster spots.

• The New England Patriots have released linebacker Marques Murrell. The move Monday opens a roster spot for offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka, who was on the suspended list for one game.

• Starting right guard Max Unger is likely out for the Seattle Seahawks game Sunday at Denver after suffering a toe injury in the season opener.

• Justin Harrell’s season is over, and the defensive lineman’s future with the Green Bay Packers is in doubt. Harrell sustained a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury in Sunday’s victory at Philadelphia, the latest in a long line of significant injuries for the team’s first-round pick in the 2007 draft.

• St. Louis Rams linebacker Chris Chamberlain will be sidelined six to eight weeks due to turf toe on his left foot, an injury that left him wearing a cast.

• The Detroit Lions and Matthew Stafford are relieved the quarterback doesn’t appear to need surgery on his throwing shoulder. Stafford was knocked out of the season opener when Chicago’s Julius Peppers sacked him Sunday, putting him on the sideline with a banged-up right shoulder — his third injury in two seasons.

• Buffalo Bills middle linebacker Paul Posluszny will miss about three weeks after the starter hurt his right knee in a season-opening loss to Miami.

• Deion Sanders, Curtis Martin, Marshall Faulk and Jerome Bettis are among the first-year eligible candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2011. In all, there are 113 modern-era nominees, the Hall announced Monday. From that list, Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 as semifinalists; that group will be announced in November. Also on the modern era list as first-time nominees are Jimmy Smith, Willie Roaf and former coach Dick Vermeil.
