Helping hands needed for GaDuGi fundraiser

GaDuGi Safe Center is seeking volunteers for its Rev It Up! 1/2 Marathon and Car Show fundraiser on Oct. 2 at Broken Arrow Park. About 200 volunteers are needed for the run, which starts at 8 a.m., and another 50 volunteers are needed to staff the Car Show from 11 a.m. to dusk. Contact Pam Lawrence at 843-8985, ext. 320.

Immediate needs

• The River City Reading Festival is in need of volunteers to help in various capacities for its event taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. This year’s focus will be on children and the event is co-sponsored by Altrusa of Lawrence and The Friends of the Library. Volunteers will be needed to help set up and tear down the event, assist participating authors, help children make crafts, etc. There will be two volunteer shifts available for the event: 9:30 a.m. to noon and noon to 2:30 p.m. Visit www.rivercityreadingfestival.org to complete an online volunteer form, or contact MaryAnn Clark at ksclarks@sunflower.com or 843-4551 for more information.

• Kids Voting is in need of volunteers at more than 50 polling sites to help children cast their ballots when they arrive at the polls on Election Day, Nov. 2. Shifts are approximately 2 to 3 hours long and volunteers will help kids sign in, give them their ballots and assist them with voting. All volunteers must attend a training session on Oct. 28 at either 4 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center. Contact Lori Johns at 865-5030 or info@rhvc.org for more information.

• Family Promise is in need of volunteers to help staff its second annual Family Promise Auction & Golf Tournament being held Sept. 19-20. For information, contact Sam at 845-9261 or Samantha@Lawrencefamilypromise.org

• AARP Tax Aide Volunteers are needed. Volunteers will help provide free income tax preparation and electronic filing services to needy Lawrence residents for the 2010 tax season. Volunteers will receive all necessary training in January on use of the IRS-provided computer program, new tax law changes, and state tax preparation.
