Kind strangers

To the editor:

As I was walking my dog Hunny back to the car after the Pooch Plunge at the city pool, she broke loose from her collar and leash and proceeded to run wildly all over downtown Lawrence. I want to send heartfelt thanks to the many strangers who helped my husband and me catch Hunny and bring her home in one piece.

There were people who called to her and tried to coax her to come to them. There were people who stopped traffic on Kentucky Street, on Vermont Street and on Mass Street. There was the woman who stopped her truck and jumped out to corner Hunny while another man grabbed her by the scruff of her neck. And then there was the woman and her young daughter who committed to stay with us until the end of our ordeal.

There are only a few sights more horrifying than seeing your dog standing motionless in the middle of Mass Street with cars approaching in both directions. Fortunately, I live in a town that is dog-friendly and filled with people who are willing to help those who are obviously in crisis. Hunny is sleeping peacefully on her blanket with her favorite toy, oblivious to the chaos and anxiety she caused, and unaware that she owes her life to the kindness of strangers.

Thank you so much!
