Kei Nishikori, the 147th-ranked qualifier from Japan, fought cramps in his racket-holding right hand and elsewhere while taking a minute shy of five hours to wrap up a 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over 11th-seeded Marin Cilic.

His was one of a handful of upsets on Day 4 of a tournament that is quickly accumulating surprises. Beatrice Capra, an 18-year-old from Ellicott City, Md., made like 2009 U.S. Open darling Melanie Oudin and ousted No. 18-seeded Aravane Rezai of France, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

No. 9 Agnieszka Radwanska lost to Peng Shuai, and No. 22 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez lost to Patty Schnyder. Seeded winners included 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 2008 runner-up Jelena Jankovic and 2010 Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva. Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, like Federer, didn’t waste any time on court, blanking 84th-ranked Chang Kai-chen, 6-0, 6-0.

Wearing tuxedo lapels on her deep purple night-match dress, Maria Sharapova beat 68th-ranked Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-2, under the lights.

Sharapova was followed into Arthur Ashe Stadium by 2008 Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic, whose 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over 52nd-ranked Philipp Petzschner of Germany was interrupted briefly in the eighth game while police escorted out three spectators after a fight in the upper deck.

Iowa’s Ferentz gets extension

Iowa City, Iowa — Kirk Ferentz has said for years that he doesn’t plan on leaving Iowa anytime soon, turning down overtures to the NFL seemingly every offseason. He has given the school yet another reason to rest at ease.

Ferentz has agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2020, possibly keeping him in charge of the Hawkeyes for the rest of his career. The new deal was announced Thursday and bumps Ferentz’s salary from roughly $3 million per season to nearly $3.7 million starting immediately. It would make Ferentz the highest paid coach in the Big Ten.

Nebraska loses another LB

Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska has lost a second linebacker to injury after Will Compton hurt his foot during practice.

Coach Bo Pelini announced Compton’s injury Thursday and said the sophomore would be sidelined indefinitely and likely miss Saturday’s season opener against Western Kentucky.

Nebraska also said sophomore offensive lineman Brandon Thompson will miss Saturday’s game because of injury, but the team did not say what Thompson’s injury is.

Tide’s Dareus ineligible for 2 games

Montgomery, Ala. — Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus has been declared ineligible for two games for accepting nearly $2,000 in improper benefits during two trips to Miami.

Pittsburgh — Ben Roethlisberger’s six-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy likely will be shortened to four games by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell after the two meet in New York today.

MU recruit to miss start of season

Columbia, Mo. — A highly regarded basketball recruit will not start the season for the Missouri Tigers. Tony Mitchell has not enrolled at the university for academic reasons and is currently ineligible to play basketball. Mitchell is a 6-foot-8 forward from Dallas considered one of the top recruits in the nation. He averaged 20.5 points and 13.2 rebounds last season.

Royals extend deal with Omaha

Omaha, Neb. — The Kansas City Royals have extended their contract with Triple-A Omaha through the 2014 season. The Omaha club has been Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate since the Royals joined the American League in 1969 as an expansion team.

Former Lawrence High football player Mike O’Toole will have many friends in Lawrence tuning into ESPNU at 4 p.m. today to watch Wheaton Warrenville South play Maine South in a clash between Illinois high school football powerhouses. Mike’s son, Reilly O’Toole, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, starts at quarterback for Wheaton Warrenville South. O’Toole has made an oral commitment to attend University of Illinois on a football scholarship.
