Recruit Perry Ellis schedules unofficial visit to KU

Wichita Heights junior forward Perry Ellis will make an unofficial visit to Kansas University’s campus on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pounder, who is ranked No. 19 in the Class of 2012 by Rivals.com, will be taking advantage of a day off of school, his mom said Tuesday night. Heights is not in session on Monday or Tuesday of Labor Day weekend.

Ellis has received scholarship offers from KU, Kansas State, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Wichita State, Wake Forest and Iowa. He is hoping to reveal a list of finalists, perhaps before the start of the 2010-11 season.

Ellis has not yet decided whether he will attend KU’s season-opening Late Night in the Phog or Memphis’ Midnight Madness on Oct. 15. His sister, Savannah, is a two-year starter on Memphis’ women’s team. She is beginning her senior season.

Memphis’ women’s team takes part in the Tigers’ season-opening extravaganza. Ellis has scheduled no other unofficial visits at this time.

Ellis — he had a busy summer schedule which included playing for USA Basketball’s Developmental National Team — is currently resting his knees, which took quite a pounding during the spring and summer.

Ellis averaged 22.2 points and 10.4 rebounds a game last season in leading Heights to its second straight Class 6A state title. He has won the state Gatorade Player of the Year award the last two years. He’s also a 4.0 student.

Selby’s busy day of tweeting: Josh Selby had his 4,503 Twitter followers buzzing on Tuesday afternoon. He goes by the name joshSelby32.

KU’s freshman point guard from Baltimore, who has not yet been cleared to attend class or participate in games by the NCAA, posted a few updates about his current waiting game.

“I’M GOING TO PLAY THIS YEAR,” Selby tweeted at 1:49 p.m., raising the hopes of Internet users who figured that meant he’d been cleared to play at KU.

Selby followed at 3 p.m., with the tweet: “I feel good about me being cleared but I don’t know for sure.”

At that point, Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger responded with a Twitter question: “Is it a done deal, son?”

Selby’s response to Sullinger at 4:40 p.m.: “IDK (I don’t know) yet bro, but I feel comfortable about it.”

In other words … nothing changed regarding Selby’s amateur status on Tuesday. The NCAA is looking into his relationship with Robert Frazier, the business manager for Denver Nuggets player Carmelo Anthony. Frazier served as advisor to Selby and his mom during the recruiting process.

Selby is Rivals.com’s No. 1-rated player nationally.

Kaun update: Former KU center Sasha Kaun scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in Russia’s 72-66 victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday at the world championships in Turkey. He hit five of 10 shots and three of four free throws. The 6-11 Kaun has actually scored 13 points in each of Russia’s first three games, which have included two victories.

More recruiting: Coaches from KU, Tennessee and Missouri will travel to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., for in-home visits with Ben McLemore, a 6-5 senior guard, Rivals.com reported Tuesday night. McLemore is Rivals.com’s No. 17-rated player. McLemore has not yet released his list of finalists … Josiah Turner, a 6-3 senior guard from Sacramento (Calif.) High, has added UCLA and cut Connecticut from his list of schools. Turner, who will visit KU for Late Night in the Phog, will travel to Louisville on Sept. 4, UCLA on Sept. 10, Arizona on Sept. 17 and Oregon on Oct. 1.
