Wheel Genius: Road work planned this week

Lawrence

• City crews are street patching on East 15th Street from Brook Street to Prospect Avenue. The 1300 and 1400 blocks of East 15th Street will be closed during working hours. The eastbound lane on East 15th Street will be closed overnight for several more days. Then, the westbound lane will be closed for 10 days. A detour can be taken along East 13th Street and Oak Hill Avenue.

• Crews are laying brick in the 1100 block of New York Street and at the intersection of New York and 12th streets. The project should be completed by early November.

• Indiana Street from West Third Street to West Eighth Street will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for a water line replacement project.

Douglas County

• Douglas County will start construction on a bridge located on North 800 Road about three-quarters of mile west of County Road 1061. During construction, the road will be closed to through traffic. The project should last until mid-November.

U.S. Highway 56

• A 12-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 56 from U.S. Highway 59 to the Johnson County line is being resurfaced. Alternating lane closures will occur for traffic heading in both directions. Flaggers and pilot cars will guide traffic through the work zone. Crews will work west to east Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The project is expected to be completed soon.

U.S. Highway 59

• North 200 Road is closed at U.S. Highway 59 for frontage road construction work. The road will be tied to the new frontage road that runs parallel to the new U.S. Highway 59. Work is scheduled to be completed in late 2012.

l North 650 Road is closed at U.S. Highway 59 and to the west for work on a frontage road, interchange ramps and new bridge to carry North 650 Road over U.S. Highway 59.

U.S. Highway 24

• In Topeka, eastbound and westbound lanes will be reduced to one lane over the Union Pacific railroad bridge west of Menoken Road. The closure will take place on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Flaggers will direct traffic across the bridge during the closure. The bridge will be inspected during this time.

l Mud Creek Bridge along U.S. Highway 24, east of Lawrence Municipal Airport, remains limited to one lane of traffic as crews add pavement to the bridge deck. Expect delays, as traffic is governed by temporary traffic signals expected to be in service until late fall.

Interstate 70

• From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, the right two lanes of traffic in the westbound lane will be closed from the Adams Street and Branner Trafficway interchange to the Polk-Quincy viaduct. Crews will be doing patching work and adjacent ramps will be closed for short durations.

• The southeast Adams Street and Branner Trafficway is closed between the entrance and exit ramps under the I-70 overpass bridge for pavement repair work. Ramps will remain open, although drivers will have turn restrictions. A marked detour will be provided using 10th Street, Kansas Avenue and 17th Street. Westbound traffic exiting onto Adams Street must turn north toward 10th Street. Eastbound traffic exiting on Adams Street must turn south toward 15th Street. The work is expected to last into early November.

• On Monday, the eastbound left lane at the Wanamaker Road interchange will be closed so crews can clean the drain. The work will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and should be completed in one day.

• Drivers on the Kansas Turnpike just east of Lawrence are limited to one lane in each direction as crews rebuild turnpike lanes from just east of the interchange to a point just west of the Lawrence service area. The limits are expected to remain until just before Thanksgiving; the service area is scheduled to remain open throughout construction.

Interstate 470

• In Topeka, westbound 29th Street to the I-470 entrance ramp, both east and westbound lanes of 29th Street just west of Fairlawn Road to McClure Rod and the new Connector Road will all be close for resurfacing work over Monday and Tuesday night. Work will occur between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Interstate 435

• A repair and resurfacing project is under way for the westbound and northbound side of I-435, from 87th Street to Antioch Road in Johnson County. Work is set for Monday through Friday between 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. and around the clock on the weekend from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5:30 a.m. Monday. Drivers should expect delays and find an alternate route if possible. The project is expected to be finished soon.

• Roe Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 107th Street over the I-435 bridge to 109th Street. No left turns will be allowed from northbound or southbound Roe Avenue to I-435. Mark detours will be provided. On I-435, eastbound and westbound traffic to the Roe Avenue exits will be restricted to one lane. The project should be finished soon.

Kansas Highway 7

• A repair project on the southbound bridge spanning the Kansas River will shift traffic to the left lane while repairs will be made to the right lane. During the work, the Kansas Highway 32 to southbound K-7 ramp will be closed. Traffic will detour on K-32 to Nettleton Avenue and then south on K-7.

• Both the northbound and southbound lanes will be closed around the clock through the Polfer Road intersection for a traffic signal to be installed. The work is expected to last until December 2010.
