40 years ago: Parents warned about razor blades in apples

October 31, 2010

A front-page Associated Press article warned parents of the dangers of “poisoned candy and apples spiked with razor blades” which were reported to have been found in “many areas” the previous year. No “safe area” had yet been set up for Lawrence trick-or-treaters, but as usual the city urged the porch lights be turned on between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. and that motorists drive with extra caution.

Members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2312 Harvard Rd., voted unanimously to provide temporary space for the Lawrence Indian Center, Inc. The center, coordinated by Karl Talawyma, was to serve as a liaison between area Indians and community services related to employment, education, housing financial help, medical assistance, and law enforcement.
