Forty people in business suits gathered in a semi-wooded area in west Lawrence to witness the official ground-breaking ceremony for Hall-Kimbrell, the first firm to locate in the new 296-acre University Corporate and Research Park.

Deanell Reece Tacha, a Kansas University law professor and vice chancellor for academic affairs, received a call from President Reagan in which he told her that he would formally nominate her to be a federal appeals judge. The article noted that, if confirmed, Judge Tacha would be the second woman appointed to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, and only the 17th female judge in the 100-year history of the U.S. circuit courts of appeal. (Judge Tacha was confirmed in December 1985.)

The Kansas City Royals were guests of President Reagan in a Rose Garden ceremony, where the president praised the team for its “never say die spirit” and “super talented players.” Team manager Dick Howser presented Reagan with a Royals warm-up jacket, a World Series baseball cap and a bat.
