Long-range plan for troubled Topeka cemetery approved

? A judge has approved a plan that will allow a financially troubled Topeka cemetery to continue operating.

The order signed Thursday in Shawnee County District Court appoints a receiver for Mount Hope Cemetery, who will oversee the cemetery and put it up for sale or lease.

The Kansas Attorney General sought to dissolve the corporation running the cemetery because of several violations of state law. The included not keeping minimum amounts of money in three trust funds for long-term care of the property.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the corporation had been using money from the trusts to fund operations.

Thursday’s order names Edward J. Nazar, a Wichita lawyer, as receiver for the cemetery. He will investigate the cemetery’s finances and report back to the court about his plans for its operation.
