It’s the City Showdown, so you better believe that everyone who can possibly get on the field will try as hard as he can to do it.

Lawrence High football coach Dirk Wedd expects junior running back Charles Jackson and junior wide receiver Anthony Buffalomeat to see limited time in the Lions’ final district game against Free State at 7 tonight at LHS. Jackson is dealing with a hip pointer, and Buffalomeat is still getting over mononucleosis.

Wedd warns that neither is full speed and that Buffalomeat won’t play many snaps.

But their presence will be welcome on an offense that has mustered just 19 points in district play so far.

“Obviously, you’ve got to score points because they’re going to score points,” Wedd said.

Scoring points will be especially important for the Lions (3-5 overall, 0-2 district), considering their position in District 4.

They need to defeat the Firebirds (4-4, 1-1) by at least seven points and hope Olathe North (7-1, 2-0) defeats Olathe Northwest (3-5, 1-1) to clinch a Class 6A state playoff berth. The top two disctrict teams advance

“Two good high school football teams on a Friday night,” Wedd said. “It’d be hard to find something better than that to do.”
