Fifth-grade girl suspended for bringing toy gun to Overland Park school

? A suburban Kansas City fifth-grader will be suspended from school for three months for bringing a toy gun onto school property on a weekend.

Santa Fe Trail Elementary School suspended 11-year-old Alyssa Cornish until January because she and several children played with a spring-powered toy gun on the school playground on Sunday.

The straight-A student, who is a member of the student council, will miss her classes, Halloween party and will not have a picture in the yearbook. The Overland Park girl also can’t attend Girl Scouts because her troop meets on school grounds.

A spokeswoman for the Shawnee Mission School District told The Kansas City Star that the rules against weapons of any kind on school property are ironclad. She says parents and students are reminded of the rule every school year.
