From the Lawrence Journal-World on Oct. 29, 1970:

• A speech and drama department was being formed within the General Education program at Haskell Indian Junior College. A total of 36 students were enrolled in the new department’s seven classes.
• A Young Socialist Alliance organizer from Chicago, speaking to an audience of about 40 at the Kansas Union, said that the conventional nuclear family was an economic tool of the capitalist system as well as a disservice to women. “‘Aside from her marginal economic role, the modern American woman has only three worthwhile purposes – as a household janitor, a buyer of consumer goods and a breeder,’ she concluded. ‘She has no role which corresponds to her abilities, so from the beginning she is conditioned to inferiority.'”
• The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission approved site plans for a Seven-11 store to be located at 23rd and Louisiana and a one-acre expansion of Meadowbrook Apartments on West 15th Street.
