25 years ago: Royals fans celebrate World Series win

Kansas City Royals fans who were lucky enough to be at Royals Stadium saw their team win the World Series in a 11-0 shutout over St. Louis. Fans in Lawrence took to the streets, celebrating with fireworks and honking horns. It was the first Series win in the team’s 17-year history. Lawrence police reported only a few complaints from loud celebrations, and city prosecutor Mike Glover said he would be “possibly lenient” with any fireworks offenders, “considering the circumstances.”

A newly-released report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that during 1982-1983, 1,987 Kansans had died in accidents, more than half of which were motor-vehicle accidents. One out of every 22 deaths in Kansas was accidental. Other top causes of death in the state were heart disease, cancer and cerebrovascular disease. Figuring in age group, sex, and cause of death, the most high-risk group appeared to be males between the ages of 15 and 24 who were driving between 11 p.m. and midnight in a rural county, particularly Chase County.
