Lack of federal funds delays $91 million road project near Kansas Speedway

? Expansion plans around the Kansas Speedway and Village West shopping area in Wyandotte County have stalled after the county missed out on federal highway funds.

The county had asked for $65.5 million for road improvements to ease traffic congestion in the area, which includes the speedway, a minor-league baseball park and stores and restaurants.

Still to come at Village West are a new casino, a soccer complex and an office building for 4,000 employees of Cerner Corp.

The Kansas City Star reports that losing out on the federal funds has set back the $91 million road project, which included two new interchanges.

Doug Bach, deputy administrator of Unified Government, says it’s unclear how long the project might be delayed. He says there is no immediate source of money available for the project.
