40 years ago: High school classes canceled for a week in Perry due to fire

Because of the recent devastating fire at the old Perry High School building, classes were to be canceled for at least a week while administrators tried to make arrangements for students to use the still-unfinished new building. Construction of the new $1.3 million high school had been stalled due to labor strikes, but there was not much work left to complete. Principal Sharp Smith said that students’ property from the first and second floor lockers had been salvaged, but anything from the third-floor lockers was a complete loss.

A panel of Lawrence physicians spoke to a group of about 500 Kansas University students on the subject of conception and contraception. Dr. Raymond Schwegler presented an explanation of fertilization, procreation and birth. Dr. Helen Gillis, Dr. Howard Joseph, and Dr. Byron Walters also spoke at the meeting, which included a film to introduce the various methods of birth control and a question-and-answer period.
