25 years ago: Lawrence Presbyterian Manor fighting battle over property tax

Lawrence Presbyterian Manor was fighting a battle over its annual property tax bill. The manor had never paid property taxes on its main facility, which had been built in 1975, because it had been funded with industrial revenue bonds which came with a 10-year tax abatement. The city was now issuing additional IRBs for an expansion project and to refinance the remaining debt, and city commissioners had decided to require an annual payment of $10,000 in lieu of taxes.

The board of trustees of Lawrence Memorial Hospital signed their names to articles of incorporation, forming a new non-profit entity, tentatively called “Health Alliance Inc.,” intended to keep the hospital in good financial health.

Duane Bryant of Eudora reported finding an unusual frog in a creek behind his home. The frog, afflicted by a genetic defect, had come equipped with two extra back legs, for a total of six.
