Douglas County’s volunteer center has entered the Computer Age.

The United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center recently launched a new website — volunteerdouglascounty.org — that features an up-to-date list of volunteer opportunities that are searchable by agency, areas of interest or dates. And, you can sign up to volunteer at the click of a button.

Late Thursday afternoon, 68 opportunities were listed. A total of 58 agencies have signed up to participate on the site, and so far, 144 people have contacted an agency using the site.

“It’s got so much functionality. We are really excited about it,” said Erika Dvorkse, United Way of Douglas County president and CEO.

If you’re interested in serving on an agency’s board, those opportunities are listed as well.

Also, if you have an old computer, exercise bicycle, filing cabinet or other item that you are wanting to get rid of, you can list it on the site. If agency leaders see something they can use, they can contact you through the site.

“That linkage happens and nobody has to manage that relationship. The database takes care of it,” Dvorkse said.

For years, the Roger Hill Volunteer Center has printed a 50-page booklet of volunteer opportunities each fall. Before the ink even dried, it was outdated.

“Just about as soon as it was printed, there were staff changes, new phone numbers, agencies moved or the volunteer positions would be filled,” said Lori Johns, the center’s director.

That booklet will be printed one more year. The website is now the go-to place for connecting Douglas County agencies with donors and volunteers, and vice versa.

“Go to it. Use it. Check it out. And, go to it often because things will change and we will be adding and growing,” Johns said. “The more people that use it, the more the agencies will see that this is a great way to get people involved in their agencies.”
