Wheel Genius: Road work planned this week

Lawrence

• City maintenance crews will start patching the Kansas River bridge Monday. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction. Crews will also patch the roadway under the railroad underpass on North Second Street and some areas of North Third Street. The work is expected to last for about a week.

• City crews will do concrete patching, curb and gutter repair and geometric improvements to the southwest corner of 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue. Single lane closures will occur, but traffic heading in all directions will be accommodated. No turns will be allowed from northbound Haskell to westbound 23rd.

• Crews will lay brick in the 1100 block of New York Street and close the intersection of New York and 12th streets. The project should be completed by late October or early November.

• Indiana Street from West Sixth Street to West Eighth Street will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a water line replacement project.

• Alabama Street from West 10th Street to West 11th Street will be closed to through traffic from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and no parking is allowed due to a water line replacement project.

Douglas County

• Crews are working on a stretch of Douglas County Road 1029 between U.S. Highway 40 and Douglas County Road 442. During daylight hours, a pilot car will lead traffic through the construction zone. Intermittent delays can be expected.

U.S. Highway 56

• A 12-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 56 from U.S. Highway 59 to the Johnson County line is being resurfaced. Alternating lane closures will occur for traffic heading in both directions. Flaggers and pilot cars will guide traffic through the work zone. Crews will work west to east Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The project is expected to be completed in mid-October.

U.S. Highway 59

• Expect construction work at the U.S. Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 56 intersection. Both highways will remain open, but traffic routes will shift. Drivers need to use caution and drive slowly while moving through the intersection. The project, which includes reconstruction of pavement along U.S. Highway 56 and construction of a new frontage road along U.S. Highway 59, is scheduled to be completed in early October.

• North 200 Road is closed at U.S. Highway 59 for frontage road construction work. The road will be tied to the new frontage road that runs parallel to the new U.S. Highway 59. Work is scheduled to be completed in late 2012.

• North 650 Road is closed at U.S. Highway 59 and to the west for work on a frontage road, interchange ramps and new bridge to carry North 650 Road over U.S. Highway 59.

U.S. Highway 24

l On Monday, U.S. Highway 24 in Topeka will have varying ramp closures at the U.S. Highway 75, 25th Street and Goodyear Road interchanges for milling work. The eastbound and westbound right lane from Menoken Road to Rochester Road will be closed for resurfacing work.

l Eastbound and westbound traffic is reduced to one lane from the intersection at Kansas Highway 16 and U.S. Highway 24 in Tonganoxie east to the Wyandotte County line. The pavement repair work is scheduled to be completed in early fall.

l Mud Creek Bridge along U.S. Highway 24, east of Lawrence Municipal Airport, remains limited to one lane of traffic as crews add pavement to the bridge deck. Expect delays, as traffic is governed by temporary traffic signals expected to be in service until late fall.

Interstate 70

l On Monday, the right westbound lane over the Gage Boulevard bridge and both the entrance and exit ramps at the interchange will be closed for pavement repair work. On Tuesday, the left westbound lane over the bridge will be closed for pavement repair work

l Eastbound and westbound lanes on I-70 through Topeka just east of Urish Road and to Danbury Lane will have varying lane closures for pavement marking work from Monday through Friday between 6 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Work is expected to be completed by Friday.

l Heading westbound on I-70, the left lane will be closed from the Kansas Turnpike Authority’s east Topeka toll gate plaza to the Carnahan Avenue exit. Crews repairing the concrete pavement will be working Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Drivers should expect lane closures, and interchange ramps could be closed along that stretch of road. Work will continue through October.

l Drivers on the Kansas Turnpike just east of Lawrence are limited to one lane in each direction as crews rebuild turnpike lanes from just east of the interchange to a point just west of the Lawrence service area. The limits are expected to remain until just before Thanksgiving; the service area is scheduled to remain open throughout construction.

l The eastbound and westbound lanes will be reduced to one lane of traffic from 118th Street to Kansas Highway 7 for resurfacing work. Crews will be working Monday through Friday between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day. The project should be completed by Oct. 15.

l Lane closures and intermittent ramp closures will occur from 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily along I-70 from 18th Street to the Missouri state line and from 78th Street to I-635. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-October.

Interstate 435

l A repair and resurfacing project is under way for the westbound and northbound side of I-435, from 87th Street to Antioch Road in Johnson County. Work is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5:30 a.m. Monday throughout the weekend. Drivers should expect delays and find an alternate route if possible. The project is to be finished in October.

l The southbound and eastbound lanes from 95th Street to Quivira Road will be reduced to one lane on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Work is scheduled to be completed on Saturday.

Interstate 635

l From Monday to Wednesday, the northbound right two lanes will be closed at State Avenue for repairs to the bridge deck. The eastbound State Avenue to northbound I-635 ramp will be closed each day between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Work is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday.
