Possible false pregnancy for Topeka Zoo’s zebra

? A zebra that officials at the Topeka Zoo thought was pregnant may not have been pregnant after all.

The Topeka Zoo announced in August that its 7-year-old zebra, Shani, was pregnant and due within weeks. But Director Brendan Wiley said Friday Shani may not have been pregnant.

The potential false pregnancy comes less than two months after the pregnancy of a hippopotamus at the zoo went undetected until the day before she gave birth.

The zebra had shown appearance changes that signified pregnancy. But the delivery never started, and now she’s not showing any signs of imminent delivery.

Zoo staff are trying to determine if Shani was ever pregnant.
