Miami ? Dwyane Wade’s ailing right hamstring was no better on Wednesday, one day after his preseason debut was cut short following a stint that lasted a mere 3 minutes, 17 seconds. Sore when he went to bed after the game, sore when he got up Wednesday morning, sore as the day went along.

He walked stiffly Wednesday, but was on his feet for an extended period of time, which some in the gym took as a good sign. There’s still no clear indication how much time Wade will miss.

One thing, however, is certain. He will travel to Kansas City, Mo., for Friday’s exhibition game against Oklahoma City at Sprint Center, but will not play.

Bucks cut ex-OU standout Gallon

Milwaukee — The Milwaukee Bucks waived forward Keith “Tiny” Gallon on Wednesday, less than four months after selecting him late in the second round of June’s draft.

Gallon was the 47th overall pick out of Oklahoma. He did not play in Milwaukee’s preseason game Tuesday night against Chicago.

Baton Rouge, La. — LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday that starting defensive end Sam Montgomery will miss the rest of the season due to torn ligaments in his right knee.

QB Cutler returns to practice

Lake Forest, Ill. — Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was back at practice on a limited basis Wednesday after a brutal 17-3 loss to the New York Giants in which he got sacked nine times in the first half and left with a concussion. Cutler’s status for this week’s game at Carolina was unclear.

Rookie QB Hall to start for Cards

Tempe, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt announced after Wednesday’s practice that undrafted rookie quarterback Max Hall would make his first NFL start Sunday when the Cardinals are home against the New Orleans Saints. Hall, who played at BYU, will replace the erratic Derek Anderson.

RB Portis to miss 4-6 weeks

Ashburn, Va. — Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will be out at least a month due to a groin injury, putting the two-time Pro Bowl running back’s future in doubt.

NFL hits safety Ward with fine

Berea, Ohio — The NFL fined Cleveland rookie safety T.J. Ward $15,000 on Wednesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cincinnati wide receiver Jordan Shipley during the fourth quarter of the Browns’ victory over the Bengals on Sunday.

Cards exercise option on Pujols

St. Louis — The St. Louis Cardinals have exercised a $16 million club option for 2011 with three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols. The Cardinals were expected all along to pick up the option on Pujols’ contract. The team has said there’s no specific timetable for beginning negotiations on a new long-term deal with Pujols, who can be a free agent after next season.
