An unidentified man was reported to have entered the L & M Grocery at 640 N. Second, brought several items to the counter, and then demanded all the money from the clerk at the counter. When the clerk hesitated, the would-be robber hit him over the head with a soft-drink bottle and then fled the scene without any money or items when two other customers entered the all-night store. The clerk was treated and released for cuts on his head and hands.

Lawrence merchants along 23rd Street from Learnard to Harper had been suffering losses to their businesses for almost five months due to the K-10 widening project. Recently the group petitioned the city commission to help speed the project towards completion. The main obstacle appeared to be the bridge over the Santa Fe Railroad tracks. Merchants asked the city to open up the intersection at 23rd and Haskell and to pave asphalt access roads around the bridge.
