40 years ago: Headquarters staff report large numbers of students with drug problems

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 29, 1970:

An article in the “Lawrence Drug Problem” series described the resources available in Lawrence for drug users. Several agencies and organizations were mentioned who provided assistance as part of their services — Bert Nash, the Haskell health clinic, the Kansas University Psychology Clinic, and the KU mental health clinic in Watkins Hospital — but only Headquarters was mentioned as an agency which existed for the sole purpose of helping drug users. The founder and director of Headquarters estimated that of the nearly 700 students he saw annually, at least 50 percent had some sort of drug experience, while about five percent were what he termed “heavy users.”
