• A Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical division chief has been appointed to serve on a regional crisis council operated by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.

Fire and medical officials said Monday that Bill Stark was invited to serve on the Crisis City Advisory Council. Crisis City, located 8 miles southwest of Salina, was developed in 2007 to fill the need to enhance the state’s capability to respond to disasters and emergencies. It provides training capabilities for first responders and emergency management professionals.

The main purpose of the council is to provide recommendations and advice on management and development issues, including for Crisis City.

• Dr. Neal Lintecum, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with OrthoKansas PA, attended the 2010 American Society for Surgery of the Hand conference, “Embracing Excellence: Making A Difference,” Oct. 7-9 in Boston. The conference provided professionals with clinical advances and new research findings in hand and upper-extremity surgery, as well as exposure to new aspects of health care policies and medical ethics in hand surgery.

• The Jayhawk Tennis Facility, formerly First Serve Tennis, held an Oct. 28 reception to welcome Kyle Markham as the new general manager and head professional. Markham had been the director of the Country Club Plaza Tennis Center and owner of the Kansas City United Tennis junior tennis academy. In addition to his duties at the Plaza and Kansas City United, Markham has served since 2009 as assistant tennis coach at Johnson County Community College.

• Randy Warren and Lisa Fredrickson, designers for Custom Wood Products, attended the seventh annual Design Symposium hosted by the Nebraska/Kansas Chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. The Nov. 5 symposium was at Johnson County Community College.

• Dr. Carla Phipps attended the fifth annual Cosmetic Conference Nov. 11-14 in Tucson, Ariz. While there, she also attended a course on the Silhouette Face Lift and the use of Selphyll for facial rejuvenation.

• TherapyWorks, 1311 Wakarusa Drive, Suite 1000, will host a free seminar, “Handling Holiday Headaches” at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Presenters will be local dentist James Otten and Cindy Johnson of TherapyWorks. The event is part of the “Helping You Help Yourself” series held monthly at TherapyWorks. The seminar will include information about the different causes of headaches, treatment options and preventative measures that can be taken to help headaches, especially around the holidays.

• Chris’ Corner Quilt Shop and Brenda’s Machine Quilting in Ottawa will sponsor a free will donation lunch Saturday to benefit Willow Domestic Violence Center. The event will start at 11 a.m. at the shop, 3693 N. Old Highway 59. The Willow center serves Frankin, Douglas and Jefferson counties, providing shelter and other services for victims of domestic violence and their families.
