25 years ago: Prices for farm acreage showing sharp decrease from previous year

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 26, 1985:

  • Area farmland prices were reported to be “not what they used to be.” Land that had brought about $510 an acre in 1984 was now bringing about $425. Compared to four years previously, the current land prices were about 40 percent less.
  • A report on the IRS office in Philadelphia revealed unpleasant details in the workplace there, such as supervisors working consecutive 80-hour weeks, processed tax returns being found in two restrooms in the building, and over 100 envelopes containing checks and tax returns being found in trash barrels.
  • Lawrence High School football players were experiencing shock and dismay after losing 16-0 to Shawnee Mission West in the Class 6A semifinal playoff. LHS had gone undefeated into the game, but now their 20-game winning streak was over. Shawnee Mission West was scheduled to face Dodge City, 11-0, in the state title clash in Manhattan.
