Leavenworth man charged in fatal hit-and-run
Leavenworth ? A Leavenworth man is charged with involuntary manslaughter in a hit-and-run accident that left one woman dead and her husband critically injured.
Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson says 39-year-old Millard E. Wilkens was also faces an aggravated battery charge after the Saturday accident. Wilkens made his first court appearance Monday and is scheduled for a second court hearing on Wednesday.
Prosecutors allege that Wilkens hit 57-year-old Teresa McMillen and her husband, 62-year-old Lewis McMillen, as the couple walked home from the Fraternal Order of Eagles hall about a block from their home.
Teresa McMillen died later at a Leavenworth hospital and her husband was critically injured.
The Leavenworth Times reports that Wilkens indicated in court Monday that he hopes his family will be able to hire a lawyer.
