40 years ago: County commissioners approve clearing of property for courthouse expansion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 22, 1970:

  • Rick Walker, a new city employee who was described as having “long hair, a mustache and mod looking clothes,” was the leading man in an innovative experiment – “an attempt by the city to close somehow the gap … between the city administration and the Kansas University community, the ‘street people’ and the black community.” Walker was to serve as a liaison between groups and to translate their needs and opinions to the city manager.
  • Douglas County commissioners had given approval to W. A. Dunbar and Son, the lowest bidders for the job, to clear the property in the block bounded by New Hampshire, Rhode Island, 11th and 12th Streets. The block, which was just east of the county courthouse, was slated for a future courthouse expansion. The company was to remove four existing houses and one garage, leaving only one house, 1145 R.I., remaining on the block.
