From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 21, 1985:

• The controversial proposal for a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases had surfaced at a city commission meeting for the fourth week in a row. Even when the proposal was not on the agenda, proponents and opponents were occupying the lobby during the weekly meetings, awaiting the time for public comments. A recent opponent who spoke at a meeting was Carl Black, a Kansas City attorney who said he was representing the JPL gun shop at 2449 Iowa. Mr. Black suggested that, instead of a waiting period, the police computer system be made available to local gun dealers so that they could check if the customer was a convicted felon.
• The planning commissions of Eudora and Lawrence-Douglas County reached a compromise for developing a 93-acre light-industrial site just east of Eudora. The proposal for rezoning for Orthopedic Casting Laboratory Inc. was altered to prevent future strip development along the K-10 corridor.
• Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s new budget included a new trust fund for indigent patient care and $1.3 million for new equipment. The average room rate at LMH would increase from $169 to $173 per day. (See OHT for Nov. 18, 1970, for an idea of the daily room rates just fifteen years earlier.)
