40 years ago: Drug use in Lawrence schools includes marijuana, pills

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 20, 1970:

  • The latest in a continuing series of articles on the drug problem in Lawrence focused on the high school and junior high population. Highest on the list of drugs used in that age group was marijuana, followed by stimulants and depressant pills. School authorities said there was no evidence of the teenagers using heroin or other hard drugs. They also said that they knew of no drug use at the elementary-school level, although there were some reports of children sniffing glue or paint thinner.
  • In California, two-time Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling said that the powder form of ascorbic acid – vitamin C – was an effective cure for the common cold. He said that medical students had not been taught enough about vitamins and nutrition in the past, but that “physicians are now beginning to recognize the value of the vitamins.” He also said that he had been fighting off colds with vitamin C for five years “with excellent results.”
