Hippo at Topeka Zoo to be sent to San Francisco

November 18, 2010

— The Topeka Zoo will send an 8-year-old hippo who recently fathered a baby to San Francisco.

The zoo will throw a going away party for 8-year-old Tucker Nov. 22 before he is flown to the San Francisco Zoo.

Zoo Director Brendan Wiley says in a news release that the move is a chance for both zoos to meet the needs of their animal collections.

Tucker's mate, Mara, recently gave birth to a son, named Vision. The baby hippo will stay in Topeka.

Good! What a horribly small place for a hippo to be. I cannot fathom the poor hippos staying in this tiny area for much longer. ive always been shocked every time I visit the topeka zoo at how tiny this area is for such a large creature. In the winter they have no room at all to move around.
