A 33-mile wildlife fence along Interstate 70 in Eagle County is complete.

The fence from Gypsum to Dowd Junction, on the western side of the continental divide, cost almost $1.9 million. The project includes two median crossovers to allow animals to cross the interstate and 58 wildlife escape ramps.

Wildlife escape ramps are 6-foot earthen ramps that allow animals to escape the highway right of way.

The Post Independent newspaper reported that between 2002 and 2006, wildlife-vehicle collisions accounted for 18 percent of all collisions along this stretch of I-70. Wildlife collisions are most common during wildlife migration season, October through February.
