Big 12 football roundup: Gabbert sparks No. 20 Mizzou over K-State, 38-28

Colorado cruises without former coach Hawkins

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, right, runs into the end zone past Kansas State linebacker Tre Walker, left, on a 33-yard touchdown run. Missouri beat Kansas State, 38-28, on Saturday, November 13, 2010 in Columbia, Mo.

No. 20 Missouri 38, Kansas State 28

Columbia, Mo. — Blaine Gabbert got a pep talk from his coach, who reminded him of his starring role in a victory that knocked Oklahoma out of the BCS lead a few weeks ago.

Then he broke out of his slump.

Gabbert accounted for three touchdowns in a strong bounce-back effort, and Missouri made just as many big plays on defense in a victory over error-prone Kansas State in its home finale Saturday.

“I told him on the biggest stage of college football, the biggest stage you can have, GameDay and the whole thing, you executed at the highest level, and you are good,” coach Gary Pinkel said. “Never doubt how good you are.”

The Tigers (8-2, 4-2 Big 12) capitalized on three fumble recoveries, two of them huge swing plays, and scored 17 straight points to put away the Wildcats (6-3, 3-4). Gabbert led the way with 297 yards passing and rushing, hitting receivers on the numbers and showing off his speed.

“It meant a lot having the coaching staff all behind me because losing two tough games like that, your confidence is a little shaken,” Gabbert said. “It was great to get back out here, have a good day and get a win.”

No. 12 Oklahoma State 33, Texas 16

Austin, Texas — — The losing streak is over. The ghosts of all those excruciating Texas comebacks are banished.

Maybe not forever, but for one big season at least, Oklahoma State has blown them all away.

Brandon Weeden passed for 409 yards and Kendall Hunter had two rushing touchdowns as Oklahoma State ended a 12-year losing streak to Texas with an emphatic victory Saturday night.

And just like UCLA, Iowa State and Baylor players before them, the Cowboys were the latest visiting team to end the game singing with their fans in the corner of Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium before dancing off the field with their big win.

“We were due. Oklahoma State was due for this win,” Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said. “There was a lot of talk about not winning here … and they’ve had our number for a while.”

The win kept surging Oklahoma State (9-1, 5-1) in first place in the Big 12 South with two games against Kansas and Oklahoma to play. The Cowboys have never won the division.

“We can accomplish anything this year,” Oklahoma State receiver Bo Bowling said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been in this kind of position.”

Hunter ran for 116 yards. Justin Blackmon had 145 yards receiving for the Cowboys, including a 67-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter, his 16th of the season, the most in the nation.

The loss is just the latest home defeat for the reeling Longhorns (4-6, 2-5) who have lost six of their last seven games — four straight at home — just one season after playing for the national championship.

Texas must win its last two games to avoid its first losing season since 1997 and qualify for a bowl game.

“Each loss,” Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert said, “they all hurt.”

Oklahoma State will travel to Kansas next Saturday.

No. 19 Oklahoma 45, Texas Tech 7

Norman, Okla. — Ryan Broyles caught three of Landry Jones’ five touchdown passes and broke a few more Oklahoma records, leading the Sooners to a victory.

Broyles caught eight passes for 119 yards and broke Mark Clayton’s career records for receptions and touchdown catches at OU (8-2, 4-2 Big 12). He also eclipsed his own mark for catches in a season.

No. 23 Texas A&M 42, Baylor 30

Waco, Texas — Cyrus Gray ran for 137 yards and scored a career-high four touchdowns as Texas A&M rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to beat Baylor.

Colorado 34, Iowa State 14

Boulder, Colo. — Interim coach Brian Cabral won his debut for Colorado when Cody Hawkins threw three touchdown passes and Rodney Stewart ran for 123 yards.

Cabral took over the troubled program Tuesday when Dan Hawkins was fired following an epic collapse at Kansas last week in which the Buffaloes blew a 28-point lead in the final 11 minutes.

Cabral has been on the Colorado coaching staff since 1989.
