40 years ago: Public library approved in $1,575,000 bond issue, plans to be ready by December

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 12, 1970:

  • Calling themselves “stingy,” the board of the public library had not authorized the execution of a color drawing of the proposed library building because of the $300 to $400 cost. The library project was the only city project recently offered that did not have a drawing before the bond election. The city swimming pool, proposed maintenance facility, proposed new airport and new fire stations all had had drawings made before the issues were submitted to the voters. Final plans for the library, which had been approved in a $1,575,000 bond issue on March 3, were expected to be ready by December.
  • Work was progressing on schedule for the auto mechanics complex at Haskell Indian Junior College. The two buildings, costing $860,650, were to include auto mechanics, body and bus shops, classrooms, mechanics’ and tool rooms, paint spray booths, equipment, and a related work site. The complex was due to be ready by September 1971.
  • The Kroger Grocery, located downtown at 9th and New Hampshire, was advertising a 5-pound bag of sugar for 39 cents, chuck roast for 33 cents a pound, Miracle Whip for 39 cents a quart, and Sungold brand saltines for 25 cents per one-pound box.
