25 years ago: Sanctuary owner successfully sues student who used fake ID

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 12, 1985:

  • Ace Johnson, owner of Lawrence private club The Sanctuary, won a $500 award in small claims court in a lawsuit against a Kansas University student. Johnson had sued the Overland Park junior for the amount that Johnson was fined by the Alcohol Beverage Control Board for serving alcohol to a minor. The student had used a borrowed ID to get into the bar.
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital officials were still looking for ways to reduce the costs of a planned addition to the west side of the building. A second round of bids had again come in higher than the hospital had expected to pay for the addition.
  • A massive winter storm in the western states was blamed for at least 15 deaths as it dumped more than 14 inches of snow in the Utah mountains. About 500 elk hunters were stranded by up to 4 feet of snow in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. National Guard rescue helicopters had airlifted 31 to safety so far. The only effect of the storm on the Lawrence area appeared to be a week of cloudy skies.
