Topeka ? The Kansas State Department of Education says it needs more room.

Education commissioner Diane DeBacker told the Kansas State Board of Education Tuesday that the department has outgrown its current building.

The department is accepting bids for a new space that it would lease.

Ethan Erickson, director of fiscal services for the department, says all bids would be considered. And he says if the agency’s current landowners can meet some of the department’s needs, it might stay put.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the department has four locations with a total of 57,000 square feet in downtown Topeka. It is seeking a location with a total of 68,000 square feet.

Department officials say budget constraints prevent them from buying a building or constructing a new office.
