Douglas County Commissioners to consider Berry Plastics rezoning

Tonight the Douglas County Commissioners will hear the first in a line of requests involving a proposed 600,000-square-foot warehouse off the Farmers Turnpike.

The commission is being asked to rezone 120 acres of agriculture land to light industrial land at East 700 Road and North 800 Road.

The approval would help clear the way for Berry Plastics to build a warehouse facility.

Both the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission and the Lecompton Planning Commission unanimously approved the zone change.

The planning department has received several letters in opposition to the warehouse, expressing concerns about increased traffic and the possibility of spurring industrial development outside city limits.

The commissioners will hear the zoning request at its 6:35 p.m. meeting today at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
