40 years ago: Recount needed of seventh precinct votes shouldn’t effect race outcomes

Douglas County commissioners were ordering a recount of votes from the recent election in the seventh precinct of the third ward, which voted at Broken Arrow School. The county clerk explained that there had been an “obvious error” in the total count. Officials doubted that the recount would alter the outcome of any races.

The federal government’s break with the silver standard was set to occur this week. “Silver is just too valuable to be used as coinage,” said the director of the Treasury Department’s Office of Gold and Silver Operation. In 1965, Congress had ordered all U.S. coins except for the Kennedy half-dollar to be minted from a copper-nickel alloy. Now, even the Kennedy coin was to be made with the alloy. (The U.S. had gone off the gold standard in 1933 as a strategy against the effects of the Great Depression.)

Movies playing at Lawrence theaters this week included “Lovers and Other Strangers, “Son of Flubber,” “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in “The Taming of the Shrew.”
