• Judge Sally Pokorny of the 7th Judicial District in Lawrence attended the General Jurisdiction course Oct. 10-21 at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev. Pokorny, attending an NJC course for first time, attended with an NJC scholarship.

• The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce has announced its newly elected board of directors for 2011. The following members will serve the board for the coming year beginning Jan. 1:

• Pattie Johnston, senior outreach coordinator for the Lawrence Public Library, attended the 2010 joint conference of the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services and the Association of Rural and Small Libraries Oct. 14-16 in Denver. Both associations are affiliated with the American Library Association. Johnston presented “More than Flashlights and Bleach: Emergency Preparedness for Outreach Services.” She is also a member of the Board of Directors for ABOS.

• Ad Astra Acupuncture, 1119 Mass., will host a grand opening event with free treatments and demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Nick Kurtz is the owner and acupuncturist.

• The Kansas Board of Accountancy has announced 57 candidates who have successfully passed the computerized examination in the July/August exam window. Area candidates include Jennifer Felts, Sarah Abel, Weston Crawford, Rebecca Fenili, Dominic Ortiz and Carlie Bittel, Lawrence; and Teresa Hodges, Wellsville.

• The City of Wellsville celebrated its 140th year and welcomed its first pet store, Powers Pet Shop, 516 Main St., owned by Jason Powers. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place Oct. 19 with the help of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce.

• Health Care Access clinic has hired Kim Johnson as an assistant director. Johnson has a master’s degree in community health from Kansas University and has worked 12 years in KU’s Center for Physical Activity and Weight Management.

Nikki King, executive director, said two employees recently left the clinic: Shasta Zielke, wellness coordinator and executive assistant, and Misty Harris, grant writer. Johnson will be filling both of those roles in the new position.

• KU Credit Union business development officer Kirsten Flory presented a check for $2,800 Oct. 29 to Free State High School Principal Ed West and Lawrence High School Principal Matt Brungardt during halftime at the football game between the schools. The money, generated by KU Credit Union’s School Spirit Debit Card program, has generated nearly $6,000 since the program’s inception in the fall of 2009.”

• The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department has hired coordinators for two programs.

Jennifer Church leads the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition program, commonly called WIC. The program provides nutrition counseling, education and food vouchers for pregnant and/or breastfeeding women and their children up to age 5.

Rebecca Holmes was promoted to coordinator of Project LIVELY, which stands for Life, Interest and Vigor Entering Later Years. The program is unique to Douglas County and serves about 150 adults, 60 years and older, by linking them with the services necessary to help maintain their independence and remain in their homes.

• The Oread’s Lemon Bliss Spa is opening another location in downtown Lawrence’s historic hotel : Lemon Bliss Nails at The Eldridge, headed by Rachel Warkins. Warkins, of Lawrence, has been a nail technician for 15 years and is certified by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology.

• Local American Family agent Ron King was named October District Agent of the Month. The award is based on all lines production.
